Admission Eligibility and Requirements
Our Associate of Science in Funeral Service Education (FSE) program at Miami Dade College is divided into three parts:
- General Education Courses
- Pre-Entry Courses
- Major (FSE) Courses
Requirements for Program Admission:
To qualify for full admission into the major (FSE) courses, students must:
- Complete all General Education and Pre-Entry courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 – no exceptions
- Earn a grade of “C” or higher in each required course.
- Attend a mandatory FSE Orientation before beginning major courses (offered at the start of Fall and Spring semesters only).
Important: Students who do not meet the 3.0 GPA requirement will not be admitted into the major courses and will be permanently removed from the program.
Program Continuation and Standing:
Once fully admitted into the program, students must:
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 – no exceptions.
- Enroll in at least 9 credits per major semester (Fall and Spring).
- Students who receive a total of three grades of D, F, or W across both pre-entry and major courses will be subject to removal from the program.
- FSE courses older than 3 years must be retaken or validated via a competency exam.
- FSE courses are in-person or blended.
Important: Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.5 after admission will be permanently removed from the program.
Graduation & Licensure:
- Complete all required coursework to graduate from the program.
- To qualify for licensure, students must also complete a 1-year internship, which they may begin applying for once they have completed 75% of the program.
- Pass both sections of the National Board Exam (Arts and Sciences) as required for licensure.
Admission Process
To apply for admission to the Funeral Service Education (FSE) program at Miami Dade College (MDC), follow these steps:
- Apply to Miami Dade College (MDC) - Complete the online application available on the MDC website.
- Submit Transcripts - Send your high school transcript and any college transcripts (if applicable) to MDC. You will need to wait until your transcripts are evaluated before proceeding. For updates on your evaluation, please contact the Evaluation Office at (305) 237-0440.
- Complete General Requirements and Pre-entry Courses - You must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Attend FSE Orientation - Orientation for new and current students will be hosted at the beginning of each major semester (Spring and Fall; not offered during Summer). Attendance is mandatory before starting major courses.
