Dear MDC family,
On September 11, our nation will pay tribute to the heroes lost and injured in the 9/11 attacks 20 years ago. Time and time again, we have seen first responders and countless individuals rise in service to help their neighbors during their darkest hours.
Even with everything that has happened in the world since then, the passage of time has not erased the pain caused by this tragic event that occurred two decades ago.
In honor of those who died or risked their lives to help others during the attacks, MDC will host the following remembrance events: |
North CampusFriday, Sept. 10, at 9 a.m. | West Lawn Plaza area
9/11: Resilience and Strength
The North Campus and its acclaimed School of Justice, Fire Science Program, Student Government Association and Student Life will honor the nearly 3,000 men, women and children from more than 90 countries who perished during the 9/11 attacks. The keynote speaker will be Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Danny Cardoso. MDC’s North Campus is home to two steel artifacts from the World Trade Center donated to the College by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. |
Kendall CampusWednesday, Sept. 8 | 11:30 a.m. | Shark Tank (in front of Finn's Bistro)
9/11: 20 Years Later
Join Kendall Campus as we remember the life-changing events of 9/11. Student/veteran Russell Otway will lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent meditation in honor of this important date in history 20 years later. There will be a showing of media from the day of the event, as well as a musical dedication. |
Homestead CampusThursday, Sept. 9 | 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. | Building D Breezeway
9/11: National Day of Service Involvement Expo
In observance of this day and its 20th anniversary, local community partners will convene at the Homestead Campus to provide service opportunities to our students. In addition, students will have the chance to write their thoughts of remembrance on a reflection board, explore some of the meaningful opportunities to become servant leaders on campus and in the community, learn about post 9/11 financial aid opportunities, and engage in the 9/11 pop-up library. Student Life will also offer 9/11 commemorative lapel pins in observance of this 20th anniversary for all first responders, health care workers, police officers, fire rescue and military service members who join us. |
Wolfson CampusSaturday, Sept. 11 | 9 a.m.
9/11: National Day of Service
For the fourth year, Student Life will commemorate 9/11 by hosting the annual 9/11 National Day of Service. Students at Wolfson have committed to honoring the lives of the 9/11 victims and their families by serving their community and giving back. To continue with the commitment to environmental sustainability, this year our campus’ Inter Club Council members and Student Government Association have partnered with the local nonprofit Clean Miami Beach
to serve on a day-long coastal cleanup. Through this organized event, students will receive in-depth training on the negative impact of single-use plastics on the earth’s ecology and will have the opportunity to participate in meaningful hands-on team-building events and data collection. The event is strictly limited to 50 people. Contact Wolfson Campus Student Life Director Annielys Sosa for more information at asosadia@mdc.edu or 305-236-3535. |

In addition to the service opportunities, Phi Theta Kappa and the Student Government Association will host a drive to support Haiti relief efforts. Let’s all take this moment to reflect on how blessed we are to live in a nation where we are free to be who we want to be and express ourselves authentically, as we continue to strive for understanding, equity, inclusion and peace for our community and nation. Let us also pray for those nations and regions throughout the world where division and conflict remain.
May you and your loved ones remain safe and healthy as we move toward better times.
With gratitude,
Madeline
