Dear MDC family,
Two days after the tragic building collapse in Surfside, our community continues to be heartbroken, mourning the loss of life caused by this horrific event while holding onto hope for survivors. Our prayers continue to be with the families and friends of those impacted and will persist until every person is accounted for.
We are grateful for the brave women and men on the ground serving as first responders as they heroically continue the search and rescue efforts. Many are MDC alumni such as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Alan R. Cominsky and many others in his department, municipal departments and police departments across the region. It is awe-inspiring to see how this herculean task has been handled by these individuals with such care and precision.
For our College family, helping the community is at the heart and soul of what we do every day. Many of you have been asking how you can help.
Financial Donations
The Miami Foundation, the Coral Gables Community Foundation, and the Key Biscayne Community Foundation are asking individuals to contribute to The Surfside Hardship Fund. Donors can use PayPal or credit cards. Please visit www.supportsurfside.org to help.
Donation of Items
The Family Assistance Center no longer needs for the community to donate items at the current time. Officials say they will advise if more physical donations are needed in the future. Updates can be found by visiting the Town of Surfside information page.
Volunteering
The town of Surfside activated an online form for those who want to volunteer to help support victim’s families and those who were displaced. You may provide your information by filling out the volunteer registration form and specifying the service you can provide. Updates can be found by visiting the
Town of Surfside information page.
Family Reunification Hotline
The family reunification hotline remains active for those seeking information about their missing loved ones. Family members and friends may call 305-614-1819 or go to miamidade.gov/emergency for more information or to fill out a missing person report online.
This is an extremely difficult time for our community. The College leadership and I have been in contact with Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the first responder leads at the scene to assist in any way we can. We have already delivered some surplus PPE supplies to the city of Surfside. We will keep the College community apprised of any developments. Please continue sending your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you.
